Starting a Career in Tech: Tips From an Expert

Starting a career in tech can be a lot, so today we’re laying out some advice from expert Helen Kruskamp.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be asking our key recruiting partners what skills are top-of-mind, what advice they have for job seekers and what they love about their jobs. Today, we’re featuring Helen Kruskamp, Senior Talent Acquisition Manager at Spreedly.

1. What advice do you have for people starting a career in tech today?

Don’t leave anything to the recruiter or hiring manager’s imagination. If you are not the “typical” candidate or your experience isn’t an obvious match be sure to connect the dots. Include a brief cover letter explaining exactly why you are a great fit for the role. Recruiters and hiring managers may be very open to taking a chance on a non-traditional candidate, but they are unlikely to make the connections without your help.

2. What skills do you think will be most important in tomorrow’s workforce?

Curiosity, adaptability, and dedication to learning are incredible skills for someone starting a career in tech. Your hard skills may qualify you for a job today, but your soft skills will make you invaluable to a company in the long run.

3. What’s your favorite part of your job?

I am honored to be a part of each candidates’ professional journey as they’re starting a career in tech. I absolutely love connecting wonderful people with new opportunities. Job searching can be a vulnerable experience, especially for people with diverse backgrounds, those changing careers or coming back after time away, or those who have experienced layoffs and other challenges. Whether you wind up working at Spreedly or not, I hope you feel respected and have the opportunity to learn when you engage with us as a candidate.
