Lack of diversity in tech isn’t a new problem, but organizations like Spencer Health Solutions, Inc. have found coding bootcamp scholarships to be helpful in advancing their diversity strategies.
It’s no secret that the tech industry has long struggled with diversity, and many say this problem is the root of the larger issues that plague the industry. The 2014 Diversity in High Tech Report from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission stated that the percentage of black employees in high-tech industries is 7.4%, while 13% of the U.S. population is Black. Hispanic employees hold about 8% of jobs in high-tech compared to them making up 18% of the population.
If you factor in gender identity to this data, you’ll find that Black, Latina, and Native American women earned only 4% of computing degrees in 2016, and experts believe that these numbers have barely moved in the last 5 years, emphasizing the importance for things like coding bootcamp scholarships now more than ever.
While the lack of diversity in tech has significant impacts in terms of fairness and equity in the company culture, it has also resulted in flaws in the industry’s own products. From facial recognition technologies that discriminate against people of color, to speech recognition not understanding underrepresented accents, to VR headsets that work well for men but often cause women to feel nauseous, the diversity gap in tech is very real and is impacting the industry in more ways than one.
Companies like Spencer Health Solutions, Inc. are looking to tackle this issue. Spencer Health Solutions, Inc. partnered with Momentum to help to drive diversity in tech by providing coding bootcamp scholarships to people from underrepresented minority groups to enroll in Momentum’s full-time 16-week Software Engineering Immersive course. Momentum and Spencer Health collaborated to make progress toward Spencer Health’s tech diversity objectives.
